Volunteer with Team Powderhorn and make a difference
in the lives of the athletes, their families and your community.

Volunteers are at the heart of our ability to carry out our mission. Each year, more than 20 volunteer coaches take part in CDA's Special Olympics ski and snowboard race program called "Team Powderhorn", contributing hundreds of hours of service. I invite you to join these volunteers, as we partner with our athletes to fill the winter with possibilities.

I will work with you to find a position that addresses your reasons for wanting to volunteer. There is no typical CDA volunteer: our volunteers come from a variety of cultural backgrounds and ages. Once you commit to volunteering with Colorado Discover Ability, you'll receive training designed to enhance your volunteer experience through individual instruction and a variety of clinics focusing on adaptive skiing and snowboarding with a race component. You do not need to have any previous medical training or background. As a volunteer you will also be eligible for assistance in obtaining adaptive and alpine skiing/snowboarding training through the official PSIA/AASI and USSA clinics.

On-Snow Volunteer Coaches

Volunteer coaches typically work one-on-one with an athlete or in very small groups, teaching the ski or snowboard racing and assisting the individual in improving skills both physical and technical. Volunteer coaches report to the Head Coach who supervises the training, evaluates coach's performance, works on developing new training skills throughout the season, and ensures that the program goals are met.

Volunteer coach requirements:

  • You must be at least 18 years old (16 years old for junior coach).
  • Be an intermediate or better skier or boarder.
  • Have your own ski equipment with indemnifiable bindings or snowboard.
  • Attend all required training in your chosen sport.
  • Volunteer ten days as a coach during the season (December through March).

Some of the Benefits

  • Season pass to Powderhorn Resort for coaches who dedicate 10 or more days during the winter season. Season pass entitles coaches to discounts at Powderhorn Resort.
  • Storage for ski or snowboarding equipment in CDA's shed at Powderhorn.
  • Real "Pro" deals on ski/snowboard gear and apparel.
  • Great training trips to Copper, Breckenridge, Telluride and other resorts.
  • Discounted season pass for any dependent listed on volunteer's tax return.
  • Good company of other coaches, new friendships, and camaraderie like no other.
